The Chenin Grape

You most probably have never heard of the Chenin Blanc grape. Surely Chardonnay and Sauvignon but not Chenin. And there’s the rub ‘cos you are missing out on the next big thing in white wine. CHENIN.  Now to drink Chenin you need to be buying your wine from the central Loire Valley in France because it’s the only real place where the grape is grown to make white wine and wow what a delicious wine it makes. The thing is it can be made into a wine for all palettes whatever your taste. So if you are a dry crisp wine fan then this is the wine for you. Likewise if you prefer an off dry tender wine then again the chenin will give you your fix.  Then if its a medium you hanker for no problem its available. It can even produce the most sublime sweet wines. Yes I know nobody likes sweet wines but what I can tell you is that when we have our guests in France for an evening soiree and we give them a sweet with their dessert  they go loopy. Well there we are. Robert today has ordered some to take back to the UK. Its also a great aperitif. Drink it cold. And finally Chenin makes the most fruity sparkling wine here in the Loire Valley. Forget £30 bottles of bland champagne. This stuff is cheaper and so much better. Full of zing and flavour.

So how do you grab your white wine made from the chenin grape. Easy just log onto www.gfwine.co.uk and select the white wines on offer. We provide details of the wine styles so you can select your particular style.  All our white wines are made from the chenin grape. IT’S THE NEXT THING TO ROCK AND ROLL. You need to be ahead of the game.

Enchantoir wines

We had a really thorough tasting of the 2010 vintage. Saumur Blanc, Saumur Rouge and Saumur Puy Notre Dame from the vats, and Cuvee Madelaine and Clos de Chavannes both 2009 which have been in oak barrels since vinification and storage when the wines were transferred in 2010. Pierre Van Den Boom continues to taste the wine regularly and will decide when the wine is right for bottling. It could be this year around September or next year. We will report on the tasting on the next blog. Keep your eyes peeled for the tasting report. 2010 is definitely as good as 2009 and maybe better. The wines a velvety smooth and certainly in advance of their progress in 2009. Its exciting stuff and we can report further accolades which means we will be struggling to get hold of enough wines. Get the orders in.

Back in wine country

Our spring trip back to see our winemakers will soon be upon us. We’ll be travelling over on Sunday. Sunday is a good day to travel in Fance as lorries apart from essentials are not allowed on the motorways. Generally its quiet and an easier trip.

We will be visiting all our winemakers and catching up on progress of the 2010 vintage. Early signs are that this will also be a good year. That’s two years in a row and lucky for all you lovers of our Loire wines. Our crackers of 2009 are fast running out so bag a bargain on the website before we run dry. We’ll be tasting from the Vats and will report back via the blog over the next few weeks. We will be selecting the new wines for sale in the UK. Its hard work this wine tasting business!

We will also be meeting up with Philippe and Agnes Porche from Domaine de Rocheville to discuss the forthcoming London Interantional Wine Fair at Excel on 17-19 May. We will be on Stand G60/1J with Domaine de Rocheville so anyone in the trade who is coming please pop along to see us. There will be some of the new vintage to taste.

The corks will be popping at Luella’s Boudoir tomorrow.

Have had a busy week preparing for our three wine tasting events. A 2 day event starting tomorrow at One Marylebone, London with Luella’s Boudoir Wedding Fair. I’ve lost count of the number of bottles Ben and Simon are taking. Between 400-500 guests are expected and we’ll be popping a lot of corks.  We are serving a red sparkling “le Cerisier” from Chateau de Brossay, Anjou, Loire Valley. There is no refrigeration, nor any ice-making facilities at the venue and so my fridge is bursting with bubbly this evening –  mmm!? K

You need sweet music to make the perfect wine !

Have you heard this one? Playing waltzes and polkas to your wines makes them fruitier- or so certain Austrian wine producers say! Playing music to fermenting grape juice results in better tasting wine, they contend.

According to the Daily Mail, Markus Bachman, a former French horn player, has created a tiny speaker that can be inserted directly into liquid and plays a mixture of classical, jazz and electronic tunes. Apparently, the soundwaves make yeast cells move around so they absorb more sugar during the maturing process. An eminent Austrian physicist has dismissed the claims as "rubbish" and added that fungi don't have opinions and wouldn't care what type of music is played to them.

Maybe they should try playing some hard rock or heavy metal music, that would really stir things up wouldn't it? K
