Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Continuing on from my advice of Sunday with the glad tidings of a fruit day in the biodynamic calendar  for  Christmas. What are you having on the big day? If its Turkey or chicken why not try one of our oaked Loire white wines. Domaine de Rochville La Dame. Very structured and complex. A real match with your Christmas bird. If red meat why not try one of our southern french wines. Abbaye des Monges cuvee Augustine. Clean and well balanced with a deep compoted fruit flavour. yummy.

Waitrose chicekn and stuffing sandwich?

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Spot the chicken in this Waitrose chicken and stuffing sandwich folks. Chicken is first on the list so you would assume that it dominates proceedings? Well you would be wrong. What cxxp Waitrose. I’ve noticed that with some of their products the quality is poor. Take wine for example. There is a load of very cheap cooperative and negoiciant wines from France. Surely they can source better wines if they tried. As usual its all about price and profit so the customer takes the hit. Poor show.

Chateau de Chaintres Blanc de Noir

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Hey its Christmas week and the big day falls on Friday. Hey presto Friday happens to be a fruit day. Wow. Great. What should we drink on such a good day? Well lets start with the morning and to start the festive caper off I would plump for a bubbly from the Loire. Here its a Cremant de Loire and one of my favourite sparkles is a Cremant from Chateau de Chaintres. Winemaker Richard Desouche makes his from the premium grape Cabernet Franc. So as its a white bubbly from a red grape its called a Blanc de Noir. Its a wonderful fruity wine with loads of flavour and just the ticket for the start of festivities.

According to Alison Loehnis of the online fashion site Net-A-Porter women make ‘wine-o’clock’ online purchases in the evenings when the kids are in bed, with a glass if wine in hand. After a glass or three its time to log on and buy your clothes ladies.

Cadbury Chocolate

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

You know that I am a passionate person particularly when it comes to fairness. The ordinary person pays tax in accordance with the rules and like many people we tell the Dept of Customs and Revenue ( I think its now called – go on lets change the name and get the taxpayer to foot the bill)  through our tax returns what we earn and we pay our tax properly. If the country is to gather in as much as possible fairly across the whole population and corporations then everyone has to do their bit. Otherwise we cannot afford to run our public services. We already know of the squeeze on the NHS, education etc so EVERYONE who earns should contribute. They don’t. Lets take for example Cadbury, makers of chocolate products. It used to be a quintessential british company until the board decided they could make loads of personal bucks selling out to Kraft Foods of America. Kraft have not paid a penny in tax since the takeover in 2010. Not one penny. Yet they made profits each year in the UK. For example in the year ending December 2014 they made £96.5m but because of an unsecured £8.2bn debt from the £11.5bn takeover they pay absolutely no tax. In addition Kraft paid £1.3bn in dividends in the same period. To whom and did they pay tax? Its disgusting is it not? What would the tax income of millions of pounds do for our public coffers?  If you also feel as I do then you can do something. Don’t buy Cadbury products.

Taittinger Champagne

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Hey did you hear that the french champagne house Taittinger is planting a vineyard in Kent, UK. They have purchased 170 acres near Canterbury and will be planting the three champagne grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The site has the perfect terroir for making sparkling wine. The bubbly will be called Domaine Evremond. It takes its name from Charles de Saint-Evremond a french poet who increased the popularity of champagne in England at the court of Charles ll. So there you have it. It’ll take a few years to establish the vineyard and then to make the first vintage before we will be able to taste the new bubbly.

A rare plant found in rural Wiltshire

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

It is very rare indeed to discover a new plant species anywhere in the world. It is even rarer to find one in the UK. Have a look at the plant discovered in rural Wiltshire ( not Shropshire) recently. Maybe its already been discovered and you know the latin name. Any ideas? Otherwise I will apply to register a new name.

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Christmas is fast approaching less than two weeks. The week ahead looks mixed if you are looking to find that day to open a good bottle of wine. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are all root up to 11am on Wednesday. Wednesday afternoon and Thursday are both flower so you have the time to open that good bottle. SO what should it be? Well as we are approaching the festive season I would go for a big red with loads of body for a winter’s day. Our Chateauneuf du Pape from Domaine de la Ronciere fits the bill. I would pitch it with a juicy steak, roast lamb or even a some grilled fish. It has a ruby robe with aromas of red berries and spices on the nose, Powerful and robust with soft tannins. Well structured, fresh and nice length on the palate. Perfect.

The lady by the pond

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

So far the suggestions as to where the pic on the blog yesterday was taken from The White Horse has resulted in some pretty poor answers notably one saying it was Bridgenorth. As a further clue the place has a duck pond which is frequented by a beautiful lady and some ducks. I hope that helps you all. And just in case someone might make a further poor answer it is not in Shropshire.

Can you guess where this photo was taken? I’ll give you a clue its in the UK. I’ll bet you cannot unless you are able to recognise the stone of the buildings. Anyway the view was from a window in a pub called The White Horse. A clue. A pretty mediocre glass of Sauvignon blanc and Voignier blend. The usual quite ordinary wine you find in most pubs.
