You know that I am a passionate person particularly when it comes to fairness. The ordinary person pays tax in accordance with the rules and like many people we tell the Dept of Customs and Revenue ( I think its now called – go on lets change the name and get the taxpayer to foot the bill)  through our tax returns what we earn and we pay our tax properly. If the country is to gather in as much as possible fairly across the whole population and corporations then everyone has to do their bit. Otherwise we cannot afford to run our public services. We already know of the squeeze on the NHS, education etc so EVERYONE who earns should contribute. They don’t. Lets take for example Cadbury, makers of chocolate products. It used to be a quintessential british company until the board decided they could make loads of personal bucks selling out to Kraft Foods of America. Kraft have not paid a penny in tax since the takeover in 2010. Not one penny. Yet they made profits each year in the UK. For example in the year ending December 2014 they made £96.5m but because of an unsecured £8.2bn debt from the £11.5bn takeover they pay absolutely no tax. In addition Kraft paid £1.3bn in dividends in the same period. To whom and did they pay tax? Its disgusting is it not? What would the tax income of millions of pounds do for our public coffers?  If you also feel as I do then you can do something. Don’t buy Cadbury products.

I do find that people are not particularly interested in what really matters in this world. Do you? In this world of ours we are more interested in convenience and egoism and we ignore that which really matters. What matters is the community that we live in so it goes deeper than having a good time. It is about support and encouragement within our community. I know that we should have some balance between that good time and support but actually you can do both with support and having a good time. Take our local winemaker who works hard to survive in the world of big business and commercialism. He and his wife arrange thrice yearly events to showcase their wines. A white day in March. A pink day in June. A red day in September. So we have the pink day tomorrow.  I had taken some time to inform  quite a number of our acquaintances of the event well in advance. Probably around thirty people some as long ago as two months ago. Do you know most either did not respond or called in to say they had other appointments. What crap. They were more interested in having a good time and not bothering with an event that only takes place three times a year.  Local community and business is slowly disappearing in France as it is in UK because people are too bloody lazy, ignorant, or just plain stupid to understand that we need to do something about globalization. We allow and encourage the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer by not supporting small business. Come on people. You purport to be  lefties but actually you are capitalists.

Here’s to those that are coming along to enjoy the day.

Do you enjoy your glass of wine when  you go to the pub or restaurant? I don’t and I dispair that the wine we are served is so absolutely rubbish and horrible. Let’s take for example an experience yesterday at a pub in Wiltshire (I won’t mention the exact place). The wine was a red merlot and it tasted of soap. Disgusting. Then a meal somewhere else with another horrible glass of wine. These house wines should be poured down the drain and the manufacturers, importers and outlets should be told what rubbish they sell to customers. Please do not go to these places and only go where proper wine is available. I always taste before I buy and so should you.

Did you read the article in the Daily Mail by Tony Edwards. Its all about the benefits of drinking wine. So people lets get drinking. But how much is healthy for you and when does it become unhealthy? There’s the problem because nobody really knows and in the article the amount required to help prevent and fight different diseases varies. It seems that regular and moderate amounts will certainly help. The article goes on to say that if you don’t drink at all you have  a defined risk of developing all sorts of medical problems in your heart, joints, brain, blood sugar levels and kidneys – indeed all round your body. So there  you have it. There’s no excuse for not logging on to our website and bagging some good natural wine at a very good price.

If you had the choice of wines from one of these vineyards which one would you choose? The top is an organic vineyard, the middle where the ground under the vines has been sprayed with weedkiller  and the bottom where every last vestige of ground has been sprayed. I don’t need to be given any other choice because in principle and for my health why should I risk the wine from the bottom vineyard or even the middle one. You may not like the wine from the top one but there are now plenty of producers who are natural and organic winemakers to choose from.

Anyway probably this is the least you should worry about when buying wine. Why not look at the chemicals approved by countries with some control firstly. That may be bad enough because there are deadly toxic chemicals allowed in many countries like Australia, but what about where there is little control. What is in your wine?  Of course nobody except the producer knows. There may be very small amounts of these chemicals in residual amounts but who knows what the long terms effects are? That’s the reason you should look to buy your wine from a source with known provenance. Like you do with food. Rule No 1 Get to know your winemaker first. You won’t find him on the supermarket shelves that’s for sure.

a pic from the crazyfrenchlady website

Here’s a definition of natural wine from Isabella the crazy French woman:

‘There is no official definition of ‘natural wine’ so here is one that I have come up with after a lot of tasting, reading and talking to producers. Natural wine is made from grapes that are, at a very minimum, farmed organically or biodynamically, harvested manually and then made without adding / or removing anything during the vinification process. Ideally nothing is added at all but – at most – there might be a dash of SO2 at bottling. A handful of farmers manage to produce great wines without adding any SO2 whatsoever. It’s basically good old grape juice fermented into wine. As nature intended. The cellar is simply the place to guide what is fundamentally a naturally occurring phenomenon rather than a high-tech lab, full of gadgets and sacks of sugar, tartaric acid and powdered tannins. It is still a small movement, which isn’t particularly well known but it is time to take it seriously.’

Someone after my own heart.

Here we are in the Loire valley amongst the vineyards and cornfields and what do we find amongst us? A baguette dispenser. It cannot be true. We have amazing local boulangers. What are you doing France? You are stupid and completely bonkers. How does this reflect the place that millions and millions of tourists come to experience French culture and life? It’s going backwards. Its like the negative attitude towards this big part of the economy by the local French government representatives. The French have to be careful that they do not loose the positives of why tourists come to France. Otherwise it will go the direction of Spain. France needs to look carefully at the future.

Graingers wine blog – crap wine

Graingers wine blog Graingers wine blog Graingers wine blog

gfwineblog.co.ukGraingers wine blog.

Graingers wine blog today is all about the state of wine that is sold in some establishments now. The photo is an example of a wine sold in a multi pub chain that sells this Australian plonk as a white house wine. It is vile. Horrible. discusting stuff. It really tastes nothing like wine but of some cheap juice drink. Why would Australia want to put its name on the bottle.  I tell you something this will kill the Australian wine industry as did the quality of  wine in the old world years back. Now the tide is turning very fast. Old world wines are now great quality in the main even the IGP wines. Unfortunately France also has a problem too because again some of its branded wines are really awful.  It should ban this stuff and stick to making good quality value for money wines.

This is an example of the how low we have gone in this country with the quality of life. be it wine. food. clothes. Whatever. Its 5.5% because the duty on a wine above 5.5% is over twice that of this wine. Now the duty is £2.00 on a bottle between 5.6% and 15% whereas its 85p up to 5,5%. Please please don’t stoop so low people. Do you know the guy behind the bar told me not to buy the house white because everyone said it was crap and complained. And he’s the one person who should be trying to sell it. What does that say. I won’t show the bottle of red on offer as its a very well known brand. Its also truely horrible. People stand up and be counted. Do you really drink this muck! Tell your local pub, bar restaurant to give you a decent glass of house wine at least.

wine blog ing is fun.

Cheers.

Wine Blog – News etc

Did you see more evidence in the papers this week about the antioxidant polyphenol. Its a powerful compound that does wonders for your body. Firstly it helps to prevent the ageing of the body. The body gradually oxidises which is what ages us all so eating something with Polyphenol in it is good. It also helps to reduce cholesterol. Guess where you will find loads of this wonderful compound yes in red wine but only if its natural with no horrible chemicals and certainly not those horrible branded wines you find in supermarkets and pub house wines. Look for real wine made naturally to retain the good substances that are produced by grapes and retained when they are turned into wine. Have a look at our wines at www.gfwine.co.uk and buy a well made quality wine that will do you some good. You have read about these recent health scares. Don’t trust what is in a packet or in a bottle unless you know the provenance. You may pay a little more but its better to do that and drink a little less so the cost works out the same. Go on start looking after your body. It will lead to less health problems in the future and lead to a happier life.  Cheers.

Wine Blog – Biodynamics

Does the day on which you choose to drink a bottle of wine affect its flavour? It could be down to the moon which controls more than just the planet's tides; it influences all living organisms-including human biology and the way plants grow. If we consider the wine in a bottle as a living organism, which matures over time, then it makes sense that it, too, should respond to the rhythms of the moon. If you log onto our website www.gfwine.co.uk and click on our news page you will see our entry on which days are better for drinking wine than others. Cheers.
