Chinon, Loire valley , France

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

This is a view of the clock tower of the fortess of Chinon in the Loire valley taken from the old town below. The fortress is steeped in both french and English history. Henry ll Plantagenet of England made it his court naming it St Georges Fort. Its where Joan of Arc persuaded Charles Vll to take the throne of France and she went on to help relieve the siege  of Orleans.  Note the beautiful clear blue sky on this late October day.

Punting along on my old automobile. anyone remember kit cars? Well they were the thing in the seventies when I was running an old mini van as my first car and then I wanted something different. So I invested in a kit car from Dutton. Are they still going I wonder. I was talking to my mate John tonight who had a Lotus 7 lucky man.

The grand children helping out with the estate bottling.

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

They start them young here in the Loire valley. These are the grand children of the owners of the estate with an intern helping. They are labeling and boxing the wines of the estate. Well done. Its demonstrates what working as a family unit means at the practical end. The label machine is a simple hand operated contraption which allows the domaine to make small and frequent labeling for their wines. It is what it is all about people. If you are buying your wine in a supermarket forget it. You need to refocus yourselves to what is the real world. You might struggle only because you buy in a supermarket. Think about it.

Hey gather round and quickly before you miss the chance people. You do not want to miss the opportunity cos its a real deal. Forget all about what the effects may be on you (yes you and please email me if you cannot see the connection), the local economy, on families, on local business, on the environment, on the local community, and even on the producer who must be mad. Maybe its a conglomerate and not real people. It must be or how else can you produce wine at this price and survive let alone make a living. Its grotesque. YOU CAN BUY WINE FOR THE EQUIVALENT OF £1 per bottle at our local supermarket here in France. Yes I’m not joking. That’s £1. So can anyone explain who the winner is? AND what lurks inside that Bag in Box. BAN SUPERMARKETS and buy your wine from real people locally. PLEASE. Then you know what you are drinking and you are supporting the local economy.

This is the life

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Part of the enjoyment we get from our life in France is the real sense of being at one with ourselves, our environment, our guests  and with our winemakers. Without exception all our guests have said how much they have enjoyed the experience of being with our winemakers and in the environment of the place. There is no pretense or artificial relationship only the understanding that they and we are in the real world of a winemaker in France. We all see only the shelves of a supermarket stacked high and full of non-descript and possibly chemically produced wines which are not good healthwise and certainly of an artificial nature having been produced in a factory for all intents and purposes. Look towards natural wines.

what are you drinking?

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

I suppose you could say that my crusade for people to seek out naturally made wine might be on a hiding for nothing because all us Brits (or most of us at least) buy wine by the label and the price. Why are we so stupid? Well we follow the course of least resistance. ie its all about convenience at the end of the day. We lead such hectic lives it makes sense to do it the easy way. What poppycock. Is not your health the most important of all your priorities? Without health you do not have life. Yes. So you pop along to the supermarket and buy rubbish. Because you choose by price and the attraction of the label. We’ve all done it. Supermarkets are capitalist enterprises that are trying to take your money and make the most profit regardless of you and your health. STOP using supermarkets and use your brain for once. Make time to think about what you are buying from supermarkets and what they put in the food and drink they sell. How does it affect your body and your health long term? They don’t know and nor do you. Does it not make sense to buy your food and drink which is as natural as possible. That way it does less harm to your long term health. Think about it. Think provenance and get to know what goes into your body.Find your personal wine man.

Anjou wine region around the city of Angers

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Thinking about the art of making wine today. How does it work? Not sure why but I suppose it was triggered by the opening of a quite ordinary generic Anjou rouge made from cabernet franc grapes. Ordinary in terms of it being a wine that should not be of any note and which ordinarily you would not find beyond a recent vintage say 2013 or even 2014. Would you find a 2003. Would it be worth laying down in 2004 for 10 years. No certainly not. An Anjou is too simple and is a light wine with little tannin in it. But joy upon joy forget those experts who say an Anjou will keep say for 5 years. Poppycock. This 2003 I opened and half demolished is a complex compote of cherries and chocolate. Absolutely yummy. What do they know. What does anyone know. What I do know is keep it in the right conditions deep in the cellar at 13 degrees and let it transform into something quite magical.

Some news from Canterbury in Kent, UK. If you are venturing down that way pop into the Goods Shed just along from Canterbury West train Station. Its just outside the city walls. A great new eatery has opened up called Wild Goose. Its run by Lucy (see pic) and is designed to showcase the delicious and fresh local produce sold by the stalls of this bustling farmers market.

Taking inspiration from the European tapas style of eating, they specialise in creating little dishes of food that are perfect for sharing over a glass of wine or one of the delicious herb inspired cocktails. They  also do coffee  sourcing good beans from The Kent Coffee Company who supply 100% Arabica from New Guinea, sure to give you the kick you want!

Have a look at their website www.wildgoosefood.com. It has details of the menu and opening times.

The market itself is full of fresh local food and drink. Its a great place to  pick up your supplies for the week. You can even park for free! Then meet up with friends for something to eat and drink at Wild Goose. Its a great idea and something different for a change.
