Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Is it that time of year already? The christmas lights have appeared on the dining room fire mantelpiece. Yours truly was shoved up into the loft to seek out the decs and tree as we are having christmas in the Loire valley this year for the first time. Then there’s the problem of the lights not working so all the bulbs have to be checked and the extension leads and adapters found so they can be plugged in. Then we need drawing pins and such for fixing up the trimmings. That was the Sunday job.

Wine  blog ing is fun with Grainger’s wine blog. Its the regular spot to catch up on the latest stuff on the wine scene or maybe something quite different.  You never know what might appear.

Cheers.

So we come into the last week of November/first week of December with a long stretch of fruit days so why not welcome in the chilly weather with some decent wine on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning. My pick of the wines on gfwine.co.uk are some of the deeply fruity full bodied wine that go great with the seasonal foods at this time of year. Chateau Caladroy Cotes du Rousillon Village AOC is made from a blend of Syrah, Carignan, Grenache Noir, Mouvedré grapes to achieve on the nose  notes of spices and thyme. Very enjoyable on the palate ending in a lemony thyme aroma that is a  great match with beef stew, game and venison.

The clear blue sky in the heart of the Loire valley, France

Wow now who wouldn’t want to be part of this wonderful landscape in the Loire valley France. A clear blue sky with the spires of the church at Puy Notre Dame on the horizon. The air is fresh and neither cold or warm but just so. A great day to enjoy in the big outdoors. Golly gosh we are so lucky.

The ultimate decanter for wine

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

iSommelier cuts decanting time to minutes… as shown in the wine trade review Grapevine

If last year was about the Coravin system, that allows restaurants to offer guests glasses of fine wine without pulling the cork, next year could be about a new ‘smart’ decanter machine that cuts the decanting time for a wine from hours to minutes. The new iSommelier machine, produced by iFavine, works by aerating wine with a constant flow of “purified, medical grade oxygen” via a specially designed glass decanter. It is controlled by an App holding pre and self-programmed settings for different wines. It costs £1,299 and is exclusively on sale in Harrods for six months and available for the on-trade

What price a bottle of wine?

Wine prices on the slide…

The discounters continue to have far reaching influences on the economy, with the Wilson Drinks Report claiming this week it is their pressure on prices across all alcohol drinks categories that helped contribute a 0.1% fall in consumer inflation in October. Noticeably, the biggest price fall in drinks prices came in wine with a 5% drop compared to October 2014, on the back of a 3% drop in September. This is particularly striking as it comes in the year when there was no duty rise in March’s Budget.Gosh where is all this leading us. People do not go down the discount path. You cannot make wine at these low prices. What is in your bottle of ‘wine’? I wonder. Stick to known suppliers, merchants and buy direct from the winemakers.

The Organic Wine Fair in Saumur, Loire valley

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

If you are around next week on 28 and 29 November the organic win fair for the Saumur appellation is in its second year. Its being held again at the Salon de Vignerons at Domaine de la Bergere in Bagneux. If you drive from Saumur centre up the old roman road heading south up the hill its about three-quarters of the way up just off on the right. Organic wine is flourishing here in the Loire valley and the wine quality is improving every year so its worth seeing how progress is being made. I’ll see you there probably on Saturday.

Chateau de Moh at Candes St Martin in the Loire Valley

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Have you tried out Chateau de Moh in Candes St Martin for a stay. Rumour has it that Simon Cowell of the X factor has bought it. On this year’s show he was apparently auditioning his team at the chateau. You can still book a room there. Prices from 187€ to 503€. It has great views over the Loire from the terracing above the church at Candes and has a pool etc. It is a lovely village right next to Montsoreau with lots of facilities and sights to see in the area. Perhaps you will meet Simon and his lady when you stay there!

A pnuematic wine press

The vignerons are busy at this time in the wine room assessing the maceration time of the red grapes in the wine as it develops. They need to taste to check on the flavours and to test for the content of the juice. With the completion of fermentation it becomes a decision on when to decant the first juice (the clear wine) from the vat in which the fermentation has taken place since harvest. After the first juice has been removed the skins at the bottom of the vat are then sent to the press to take out the liquid in the skins. This is called pressed juice and may be used to blend back into the first juice, used to make a separate cuveé usually aged in barrels to smooth out the big tannins, oe kept for next year when a proportion is allowed to be put into the following year’s wine to add strength and flavour.

Sunday is the day for the our biodynamic calendar for the week so you are able to find the right time to open your wine on the day when it will be at its best

The last full week of November brings a cold snap and time to try some good wines that will be a great partner with some robust stews and pot roasts. Unfortunately only Tuesday, Friday evening after 7pm, Saturday and Sunday until 8pm are the best for your bottle of wine. I would try one of our Domaine de Ronciere Cotes de Rhone bottles. Its rich and spicy just right for that rich sauced pot roast. For a lighter red to go with a milder lamb stew try our Esprit de Vin with the same Grenache and Syrah combination of grape varieties.

Building work in progress at Manoir de Gourin

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

We progress with the new studio apartment at Manoir de Gourin. Its a little slow as work in the studio is mixed with work elsewhere. A little mishap over the summer with a guest reversing into the front fountain meant some repairs. I have finally planted the red sprouting broccoli probably too late but I might have just about got it in before the weather changes and we get some cold spells which are forecast for the coming weekend. Some electrics and plumbing is in order and some effort to haul the new water heater up onto the ceiling roof above the shower room. Rather difficult and thought at one stage I might have done myself a mischief. All I need to do now is to connect it all up. Simple hey.
