Here is the column from the Dagbladet reporter

Mahjonger – Dagbladet

October 29 2015

Six members of the renowned Mahjong Horticultural Society met yesterday in an atmosphere of keen competition. Having honed their senses on excellent chow Les Années Trente in Chinon the six made their way to Bellevue. One of the party, the one with the door key, was late returning. He said there was a prolonged traffic hold up in Chinon but, it is rumored, that a few hostelries had been frequented as he poodled his way back.

Round One: First out of the traps was Si Man one half of  Black Dogs ( note absence of partner Lawman) scoring the most rapid victory yet; blitzing his beautifully ordered tiles into a momentous final flourish. Was this to be a pointer for things to come?

Round Two: In contrast to the previous round, this was a long drawn out affair with no outcome in spite of Liz lll and Kar Girl of Pussy Cats, both bright eyed and bushy tailed, trying to blag their way to victory.

Round Three: Assisted by the black Labrador effect (Pepsi now contentedly full of cat food and purring gently) was taken by the Anglo-Swedish duo of Ha Kan Do/Roy Wyonder the Terrible Tiger Team (the tree T’s).

Round Four: The players, now husky from prolonged cheering, decided on taking a break for friandises and péttilant. After toasting absent friends with a full blooded Alsatian and wolfing down several packs of crisps the teams re-assembled. Si Man, with help from Elbow, deftly powered his way through a chicane of tiles to another victory. There followed a discussion about the cépage of Alsation sparkling with Pinot Gris and Riesling being touted as possibilities. Si Man pointed out it can be a mélange of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Auxerrois, Chardonnay, making it a bit of a mongrel.

Round Five: In a keenly fought game, the artifice of Si Man once again came to the fore and he outwitted his opponents with a hand of all pairs. There was some bitching from other players that this was not the declared intention of the round. But citing the Mahjong Pekingese Convention these protests were overruled.

Round Six: The start of the game showed Cath the Great ( deft of partner Magi Cian) surging ahead but she was dogged by bad luck as the tide suddenly turned and a few lucky pick-ups gave the game to  the Terrible Tigers duo of Ha Kan Do/Roy Wyonder .

Rounds Seven: Once again Si Man foxed the rest of the teams and played a round of perfection to surge ahead to his fourth victory.

Round Eight: Was there to be a sting in the tail? All pawsed for breath in anticipation of a great finale.  Like a whippet on crystal meth Si Man played a tour de force and hounded the other competitors to end the day with yet another victory ( a real stonker of a game).

The magisterial performance throughout of Si Man ‘the Schauzer’* Black Dog Grainger made him the 5-2-0-0 overall winner. Roundly cheered by all, the glorious founder lapped up the congratulations. There were a few inappropriate murmurings of the day being a restoration of male dominance but little heed was taken.

Asked by our reporter about why there had been such a quantum leap in his fortunes, Si Man explained that he normally has to play with an impediment but with the shackles off he felt more able to express himself freely.

Date for next play: 12.30 – 19 November; Lunch at L’ Escargot, Saumur followed by play at Le Manoir de Gourin

*THE SCHNAUZER – Smart, fearless, sometimes willful; spirited, but ever reliable.

The Mahjong Horticultural Society October lunch

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

We celebrate the Mahjong Horticultural Society October Luncheon in the beautiful historic town of Chinon at the restaurant Les Annees 30. It really is a lovely atmosphere and the food is extremely good and great value. Please go and support one of the local restaurants. We are raising a toast to absent members Lawman and Magi Cian who could not make it and were sadly missed especially by Cath the Great and Si Man.

Ah so lunch in Chinon at Les Annees 30 with four other Mahjongers. Lawman and Magi cian not able to join us and sadly missed. So a great lunch menu at 19 € for two courses, a glass of wine and coffee. Great value. A starter of Salmon or terrine, a main of duckling or sea bream, a dessert of chocolate mouse, a fruit tart, Nougat tart, something else I forgot. Well cooked and well presented. A little interlude of pumpkin soup between courses. The wine was from Domaine Noblaie an organic vineyard on the outskirts of Chinon. Classic rouge cabernet franc, Unusual chenin blanc as only a small percentage of the vineyards of chinon are planted with chenin. 90% plus is all cabernet franc. The rouge was fruity and very perfumed, the blanc steely dry with mineral notes. A great lunch venue. I recommend it if you are passing near Chinon. Note the appearance of the black dog appearing from the restaurant and bear in mind the results of the Mahjong session later Lawman. Report will be issued by R Wyonder shortly.

Chenin Blanc grapes – The noble rot

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

You may well not believe it but this pic shows a good bunch of grapes. Yes that’s right. It’s the white chenin blanc grape that has developed and matured through a process called noble rot where the berries are  affected by a benevolent form of a grey fungus, Botrytis cinerea. The berries loose the water content and effectively ‘dry’ out so that they concentrate the sugars and flavours in the shrivelled berries. The berries are picked late in the season and pressed to give a very sweet juice that is then fermented. The resultant wine is sweet as it retains the residual sugars. There are a number of levels of sweet wine in the Loire valley made by this method. They range from a light delicate wine to a very intense sweetness called ‘Grain Noble’. The real plus with this wine is that the chenin blanc grape has high acidity so there is a good balance even with these sweet wines. They are not cloying and over sweet in the mouth. Our local appellation is Coteaux du Layon from which you can choose a wine to suit your paring with food. As an aperitif, with Foie Gras, with dessert or as an after dinner liqueur. Choose your poison!  Top notch appellations are Quart de Chaume and Bonnezeaux with high residual sugar levels.

Its nearly the end of October but we still have plenty to harvest in the potager here at Manoir de Gourin. Today we picked loads of tomatoes, spinach, cucumber, peppers and raspberries yes raspberries. They will go on into November if the weather stays mild. We  have had a dry spell up to today and some much needed rain today. The forecast is for some warm weather with dry days over the week and weekend so we should continue to reap the bounty of the potager. Wonderful.

Its back to wine topics today and our regular Sunday biodynamic calendar for the week ahead. Its the last week of October. Tuesday and Wednesday to 7pm are both fruit periods so a good time to have a real decent bottle of wine. Try our white Hautes Cotes due Beaune Burgundy from Manor de Mercey. Great with fish or some lamb. Its fruity with mineral notes. Forget Thursday and Friday as they are root. What joy the weekend is all flower. Why not stick with Manoir de Mercey and try the red burgundy with your beef joint or indeed a cheese platter.

Membership of the EU

I’m responding to a report in the Independant newspaper sent to me via facebook. Its easy to make statements that have no substance or proof. Ie ‘our economy would suffer if we pull out’. Where’s the proof please?  The fact that our GDP is only 3% has no relevance to membership of the EU. Many countries of the world are smaller but function quite well in the global economy.  Countries outside of the EU trade with the EU and flourish. Actually UK  now  exports more to the rest of the world than the EU. AND  the EU parliament cost us dearly. Each of the 750 or so members costs us £1.79m. That is diabolical is it not? How can we justify that sort of cost when we have UK citizens living below the poverty level.  Let’s get out before it cost us anymore and put our money into helping the poor and vunerable.

Scientists can now prove that you can eat your way to a sharper mind and even beat dementia. AND it involves wine. Well well well what do you know. What have I been saying to you all for some time but you have poo pooed my advice. Red wine staves off age related memory loss when drunk in moderation. A recent survey showed that those people stayed sharpest.  Well there you are then. What you have to remember is that it has to be natural wine ie that which does not contain harmful chemicals. Try our organic wines at gfwine.co.uk.

EU

Its good to debate such matters as the UK membership of EU and whether it works or not. My feeling is the concensus view is for  much less power and a more manageable EU that is more about friendship and support rather than political integration with all that is involved. It obviously does not work from the experience we have seen to date. We do not want a blotted European parliament that wastes our hard earned wages and which grows the pension bill year on year that we already cannot afford.
