Mahjonger – Dagbladet
October 29 2015
Six members of the renowned Mahjong Horticultural Society met yesterday in an atmosphere of keen competition. Having honed their senses on excellent chow Les Années Trente in Chinon the six made their way to Bellevue. One of the party, the one with the door key, was late returning. He said there was a prolonged traffic hold up in Chinon but, it is rumored, that a few hostelries had been frequented as he poodled his way back.
Round One: First out of the traps was Si Man one half of Black Dogs ( note absence of partner Lawman) scoring the most rapid victory yet; blitzing his beautifully ordered tiles into a momentous final flourish. Was this to be a pointer for things to come?
Round Two: In contrast to the previous round, this was a long drawn out affair with no outcome in spite of Liz lll and Kar Girl of Pussy Cats, both bright eyed and bushy tailed, trying to blag their way to victory.
Round Three: Assisted by the black Labrador effect (Pepsi now contentedly full of cat food and purring gently) was taken by the Anglo-Swedish duo of Ha Kan Do/Roy Wyonder the Terrible Tiger Team (the tree T’s).
Round Four: The players, now husky from prolonged cheering, decided on taking a break for friandises and péttilant. After toasting absent friends with a full blooded Alsatian and wolfing down several packs of crisps the teams re-assembled. Si Man, with help from Elbow, deftly powered his way through a chicane of tiles to another victory. There followed a discussion about the cépage of Alsation sparkling with Pinot Gris and Riesling being touted as possibilities. Si Man pointed out it can be a mélange of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Auxerrois, Chardonnay, making it a bit of a mongrel.
Round Five: In a keenly fought game, the artifice of Si Man once again came to the fore and he outwitted his opponents with a hand of all pairs. There was some bitching from other players that this was not the declared intention of the round. But citing the Mahjong Pekingese Convention these protests were overruled.
Round Six: The start of the game showed Cath the Great ( deft of partner Magi Cian) surging ahead but she was dogged by bad luck as the tide suddenly turned and a few lucky pick-ups gave the game to the Terrible Tigers duo of Ha Kan Do/Roy Wyonder .
Rounds Seven: Once again Si Man foxed the rest of the teams and played a round of perfection to surge ahead to his fourth victory.
Round Eight: Was there to be a sting in the tail? All pawsed for breath in anticipation of a great finale. Like a whippet on crystal meth Si Man played a tour de force and hounded the other competitors to end the day with yet another victory ( a real stonker of a game).
The magisterial performance throughout of Si Man ‘the Schauzer’* Black Dog Grainger made him the 5-2-0-0 overall winner. Roundly cheered by all, the glorious founder lapped up the congratulations. There were a few inappropriate murmurings of the day being a restoration of male dominance but little heed was taken.
Asked by our reporter about why there had been such a quantum leap in his fortunes, Si Man explained that he normally has to play with an impediment but with the shackles off he felt more able to express himself freely.
Date for next play: 12.30 – 19 November; Lunch at L’ Escargot, Saumur followed by play at Le Manoir de Gourin
