Biodynamic calendar 2015

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Here’s our week for drinking wine based on the biodynamic calendar. Go on you should try it. Wine can taste better on the right days and here is our guide to follow. We’ve given you some ideas on the wine to drink on the good days ie fruit and flower. Enjoy.

Not such a great week this week for opening that good bottle of wine. Really the only two days are on Thursday and Friday. The start of the week is leaf on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and then Saturday and Sunday are both root days. Never mind why not try one of our ‘Friday night’ wines ie its the end of the wook so why not splash out on one of my favourite wines from Domaine de la Ronciere. Their Chateauneuf du Pape is a shining example of the appellation. Its quite expensive at £102 for a case of six but you will appreciate the quality. Super.

Wine  blog ing is fun with Grainger’s wine regularly to catch up on the latest with the wine scene or something quite different.  You never know what might appear.

Cheers.

The results of the adventure to Bordelais

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

You’re probably getting bored with my adventures in the Bordelais and quite rightly so. And so this is the last blog of my adventures in the land of wine down in the Bordelais. My pic shows the results of my adventures into the Bordeaux area in terms of wine purchased on the trip. I do not intend to drink it all but to share it with my friends here in France so that we can all enjoy the journey and if we like it then we will order some more. Is that not a good idea? Young Mr P Law happened to place an order for some St Estephe and he like me feels the need to savour the delight of some jolly good wine.We will exchange notes at the very least. Unless its a Gin and Tonic before stumps are drawn and tea? taken.

Even more serious wine tasting today in the Loire valley. For all you wine lovers come along and enjoy the delights of our local wine. Philip, Sara, Paul and Elaine ventured into Saumur Champigny country this morning sniffing out the serious reds of this appellation. Richard our host for the morning took us all through the background of winemaking and we explored the 20 hectare vineyard before tasting his wares. Three styles of the Saumur Champigny, oak fermented generic Saumur blanc, and the Blanc de Noir sparkling Cremant de Loire. Lunch was at an estate of the other village appellation of the Saumur area. Saumur Puy Notre Dame. We enjoyed tasting over lunch. We followed this with a visit to the vineyard, wine room.cellars and finally two more tastings. So a heavy day. Its no wonder our guests all ended up round the pool and promptly nodded off!

A lovely afternoon today tasting loads of wonderful wines in the Aniou appellation of the Loire valley. Hubert makes a great range of wines for the IGP whites of Chardonnay and Sauvignon and the classic Anjou Blanc from Chenin aged in old oak. Demi sec  and sec pinks from a mix of Gamay, Grolleau and Cabernet Franc, Anjou and Anjou Village reds from Cabernet Franc, Saumur Brut and Cremant sparklers and a red sparkler, and his range of three sweet Coteaux du Layon. Wow. Our guests Philip and Sara and Paul and Elaine enjoyed the journey.

When  you travel down from the north to the Medoc region there are two alternatives. Its either around Bordeaux or across the Gironde estuary. The best is to do both! Why not do the right bank first around St Emilion, Pomerol, Fronsac, Libourne . There’s loads to see and do apart from the wine. Then travel into Bordeaux and experience the city. Now you can travel up the Medoc. Go along the D2 road that passes through all the wine centres rather than the D1 which basically bypasses everything. So you have Margaux, Paillac, St Estephe etc up to the Medoc at the top. So the best way of coming back is over the mouth of the Gironde from Le Verdon sur Mer  to Royan on the double front ferry. It does not turn around like the Cross channel ferries. Half an hour and you are across. Brilliant.

Our fresh strawberries from the potager

There’s nothing better than fresh ingredients. The joy of having a kitchen garden is about the true taste and health giving properties of fresh fruit and veg. We have enjoyed our rhubarb for the last six weeks but its getting a bit monotomous every breakfast time. Never fear because the next big thing in fresh fruit  is strawberries and here we are in strawberry season. Yum. What is better than that. Of course after that we should have our raspberries that are being pollenated with our local bees curtesy of our local beekeeper Eric. Then its red currants, black currants etc etc. What joy.

Our wine tasting selection at the Maison du Vin Bordeaux

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

May I suggest that you take a visit to the maison du vin in Bordeaux if you fancy trying out the wines of the Bordelais. For one thing its a great building and interior, secondly they do a platter with the wine tastings so you can enjoy some proper tasting with cheese and charcuterie. We had lunch! They serve a simple plate of cheese or meat with bread and if you do as we did and choose three wines to taste (half measures) its quite worth while with a plate of each.. So we tried a Margaux, a Medoc and a St Estephe. It’s a jolly good way of finding out which of the Bordelais wines you prefer. We enjoyed the Margaux. So then it’s off to The Haut Medoc in search of some good Margaux. Take the D2 road out of Bordeaux along the Chateau highway and you come to the appellation of Margaux. The world is your oyster. Take your pick. Try Chateau Labegorce. Mind you its rather pricey!

Have you been to the Gironde region along the left bank of the Gironde river? Its very picturesque and interesting. Whilst exploring the wines of the area we also explored some to the sights. Here they fish using these fishing huts and nets slung over the front and dropped into the water at hightide. I suppose they catch fish. The villas along the seafront are quite different to the ordinary houses in the interior. There are these small ports dotted along the river from where the wine barrels were shipped down the river to Bordeaux in days gone by. Now they are used for leisure.

As part of the many facets of the wine industry there is still the making of oak barrels for ageing wine. The Bordelais wines are generally aged in part new and part used barrels over periods ranging from 6 to 18 months. The barrels themselves are burnt or toasted inside to varying degrees to add to the flavour of the finished wine. This is noted on the barrel. Barrels made by different companies impart different qualities to the finished wine. It is the job of the cellar master to determine the nature of the barrels, the amount of new and used barrels used in the ageing process. It is a complex and very onerous job. In many of the wineries I visited the number of new barrel percentage, the toasting and manufacture was quite unique. The end product of blending the different wines from the hundreds of barrels is what you taste in the bottle.

Back to nature and proper values

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

There seems to be little evidence of organic farming in the growing of vines that I saw anyway in the Medoc. Most of the vineyards seem to be using weedkiller on the ground. What a pity. However as the pic shows there is some evidence of working with nature and here is a local winemaker in his small vineyard maintaining the ground with his horse and plough. What joy. We should applaud those that strive to work with nature. There is in the Medoc and Haute Medoc areas a classification called Cru Artisan which  are family businesses that cultivate their own grapes, and make, market and sell their wines. ‘Cru Artisan’ is an official term that has been used for over 150 years in Bordeaux but one that largely disappeared from common usage in the 1930s. The extremes of rich and poor are quite obvious especially around the prestige estates where on the one hand you see hoards of tourists at the big commercial estates yet within a short distance are houses that are run down and in a poor state. Why don’t these rich estates put more back into the community. Because they want to make money for themselves. What a world we live in.
