We’re back in Bordeaux country with a wine from Chateau de la Ligne. The estate is in the Entre Deux Mers area.It has an interesting history with the granting of a monastery by Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1147. I tasted the Bordeaux Superiur AOP 2007 and 2008. Both wines 80/15/5% Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc. They were both quite well structured having been aged in oak barrels for 12 months and then cellared for 24 months. A nice nose of fruit and on the palate some rounded tannins.

There were quite a few champagne exhibitors at the wine fair . Our choice was an organic and biodynamic producer Champagne Vincent Couche from Buxeuil. The winery is in the southern part of the appellation with 32 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. I tasted Eclipsia zero brut  70/30% Pinot Noir/Chardonnay 2011 vintage. Eclipsia Rosé  75/25% Pinot Noir/Chardonnay. Chloé 66/34% Pinot Noir/Chardonnay. My favourite was the Eclipsia zero brut  This is a wine without sulfites. it has an intense nose of cirtus fruit and is rounded and fresh in the mouth.

Chateau Belles-Graves lies in the AOP of Lalande de Pomerol adjacent to St Emillion and Pomerol. Winemaker Xavier Piton makes 100,000 bottles of the appellation from a mix of 88/12% Merlot/Cabernet Franc. His vineyard is cultivated on a sustainable footing. The 2008 I tasted was  round and generous of  mouth with some complexity in the wine from the ageing in oak barrels.

Staying in the Rhone valley, I tasted wines from Chateau Dalmeran. This is Chateauneuf du Pape country so we tasted vintages of 2009 Domaine of 70/30 Grenache/ Mouvedre a nose of deep dark fruits. 2011 La Croze 100% Grenache a nose of leather and licorice and a taste of compoted fruit and spices, and a 2008 Les Baux de Provence Grenache/Syrah/Cabernet Sauvignon. My favourite was the Domaine. I think the 2009. Please correct me Mr Joyce if I am wrong. A couple of bottles for our tasting event in St Macaire might be the order of the day.

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Today we are off to the Cotes de Rhone and  Domaine de Coste Chaude at Visan in the southern Rhone valley. The grapes are typical of the area Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mouvedre. I tasted the Cotes de Rhone 2012 Cuveé Florilege 80/19/1% Grenache, Syrah, Carignan.  Nicely balanced not too much fermentation so light tannins.  I would probably serve this with my pork and apple stew and red cabbage. The Cuveé Madrigal 2012 has a little more Grenache so slightly more spiciness on the nose so serve with a spicy carrot and coriander soup. My favourite was the Cuveé La Rocaille 2010 vintage I think. 80/20% Grenache/Syrah. This is more structured and tannic with more maceration and contact in fermentation. Try it with Lamb.

Here’s the update for the week ahead for all those looking for the best day to drink that special bottle of wine.

Did you enjoy your wine over Christmas and the New Year? Yes well done you must have followed the calendar. No. Well please try the biodynamic calendar with us at gfwine.co.uk.

Next week is a little like last week, one of two halves. We start the week with a fruit day on Monday and Tuesday up to 5pm and then we have  a root day on Wednesday and Thursday until 4.30pm. Thursday evening and Friday are flower days. Saturday is a day of two halves. The morning and afternoon until 2.45pm is a flower day so great for a good bottle for lunch. I’m afraid the rest of the weekend is a leaf day so make the most of Saturday lunchtime. For a light lunch such as fish, goats cheese salad, a pizza, vegetable soup then why not try our Domaine Gibault Touraine Sauvignon blanc. Its a fresh and vibrant wine that will go well with these dishes.

Take a moment to delve into the wines we have on our website gfwine.co.uk.

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

An interesting tasting at the stand of Domaine la Bouysse. Actually it was somewhat a surprise as I had a single varietal Viognier which was all peachy and fresh and then a red of Carignan, Mourvedre and Syrah and Grenache.Wow loads of differences. I will ask Julie Grinard all about the wines as I am all over the place with the bottles they offer. I will say there are some good wines. Take the Valensol and the Roc  two good southern varietal mixes, and of course I enjoyed that peachy Viognier.

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

We met David Maugin and his wife of Chateau du Fresne from Faye d’Anjou in th Loire valley. We know the area well as its not far from us at Manoir de Gourin.  It is a large estate of some 96 hectares and is run by David as the winemaker. We tasted the sauvignon blanc.Don’t sniff at the Sauvignon in the Anjou area. It is surprisingly good. Not as intense as Touraine or Sancerre but actually in a way a better choice for an everyday drinker if you are a Sauvignon Blanc fan. The white grape of the area is not Sauvignon blanc but Chenin blanc. We tasted  a demi sec chenin at the top of the maturity scale with some residual sugar. Here is a domaine looking at the customer who enjoys a glass of wine without too much worry about the ins and outs of wine.

Today we are in Burgundy country with  wine co-operative based in Chablis established in 1923. It has 115 members based in the Chablis and Macon areas. The wines tasted where a Chablis and a Chablis premier Cru. The 2012 Macon and the St Veran whites were a little on the fresh side for my palate. A nice Montagny Premiere Cru with a rounded finish and a Cote Chalonnaise 2011. Not bad at all. The Hautes Cotes de Nuit Les Mouchottes 2011. A deep cherry compote on the palate.
