Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Chenin Blanc is the white grape of the centre Loire from Anjou to Vouvray and everywhere in between. Probably the best exponent of the joy of Chenin when dry is the appellation of Savennieres and its two cru wines Savennières -Coulee de Serrant and Savennières-Roche-aux-Moines. Its one of the few appellations on the north side of the Loire just south of Angers. Savennières changes between years depending on weather and also over time during ageing. In the best years it will keep and develop well. It starts off dry with a good balance but with a more complex structure than say a Chenin from the Anjou appellation. Its one of the areas of the Loire where you will come across a variety of vintages to taste. If you go to taste with  Madame  Monique Laroche at Domaine aux Moines you will be presented with probably ten different vintages that all taste very different. Chenin as it develops and ages looses its acidity and becomes almost sweet as you get sometimes with the noses even on a dry crisp wine like for example a Saumur. I’ve tasted Montloius 2005 that has became like that.

Did you read the article in the Daily Mail by Tony Edwards. Its all about the benefits of drinking wine. So people lets get drinking. But how much is healthy for you and when does it become unhealthy? There’s the problem because nobody really knows and in the article the amount required to help prevent and fight different diseases varies. It seems that regular and moderate amounts will certainly help. The article goes on to say that if you don’t drink at all you have  a defined risk of developing all sorts of medical problems in your heart, joints, brain, blood sugar levels and kidneys – indeed all round your body. So there  you have it. There’s no excuse for not logging on to our website and bagging some good natural wine at a very good price.

Domaine du Point du Jour

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Not that far from Macon is the appellation of Fleurie. It’s in Beaujolais country in eastern France. Fleurie is one of the ten Beaujolais Cru wines. Along with Cote de Brouilly and Saint Armour this Cru produces a more medium bodied Cru Beaujolais. This  Fleurie  from the Domaine du Point Du Jour is made from old vines and has a velvet texture with fruity and floral bouquet. This 2009 vintage  was pretty good so it can be aged for at least four years and up to 16 years.  Take some roast chicken with your fleurie or perhaps a slice of quiche and salad.

Bordeaux AOC wine at it best

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

Bordeaux. Yes that’s a large large questions? Where do you start? Well why not at the beginning. Forget the 1885 classification. Its for others to contemplate. Lets stick to the basic AOC classification and the lowest of the low. Bordeaux AOC. I’ve got a good one up my sleeve and do not tell everyone otherwise you will miss out. This is an ordinary Bordeaux. By that I mean its just a Bordeaux appellation and nothing else BUT that does not mean sub standard, low quality, basic, ordinary. NO. It means a very good well-crafted wine at not much money. Try Chateau Perron La Gourdine its a very good Bordeaux. Complex and well structured to deliver a bite at the beginning and then a long chocolatey finish. Superb.

gfwine.co.uk is the place to find it in the UK. Jump at the chance.

Here’s the update for the week ahead for all those looking for the best day to drink that special bottle of wine.

Not the best start to the week with root days on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday until 2.00pm.  Maybe its a good time to open a special bottle midweek as Wednesday afternoon and evening is good for go. Friday becomes a leaf day from 8.00pm and Saturday is also leaf. However you can sneak a bottle in on Sunday evening after 10.30pm if that’s not too late. Super. Why not.

Take a moment to delve into the wines we have on our website gfwine.co.uk.

chardonnay IGP Val de Loire

Grainger’s wine blog is gfwineblog.co.uk

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

I talked about quality yesterday and the three most important ingredients in wine of  taste, value for money and not forgetting the most important value of all and that’s natural wine. So blend all these together and I present to you  a most flavoursome, good value tasty natural chardonnay from the Loire valley. This Chateau de Brossay creation comes from the chai of Hubert Deffois a very experienced and magical winemaker. Just take a well matured chardonnay grape from the vine (12.5 -13%), press it, settle and decant, transfer to the vat and allow to ferment in its own sugar and yeast, some stirring of lees,  and allow some time to age in the vat on lees, settle naturally, and there you have it. Just so easy, clean and fresh and I tell you what a good chardonnay. Not the price of a Chablis at say £15.00 but less than half the price. It’s a no brainer. Pop into gfwine for a natural wine.

Grainger’s wine blog. The one and only wine blog for all you winos out there.

The interesting question with wine is all about how you define quality. Its is almost impossible as each person has a different palate. Yes experts define quality as the structure and layers of flavours that are available to the palate. On the other hand recently it was reported that of two samples tasted the majority of people chose the cheaper option in UK. Now this is probably because the wine is manipulated by addition of substances to make it more palatable to the human taste buds like sugar and acids. In my view there are three elements to what constitutes quality to us ordinary mortals. One is taste yes. The second is value for money  but to me the most important is what is in the wine in the first place. Wine has to be natural. It should be only the juice of grapes fermented with its own sugar and yeast and nothing else. That is wine. Unfortunately wine today is anything but natural even expensive wine. Value for money is very important because a lot of expensive wines are no better than cheaper wines. Take for example champagne. The expense is in the name not the product. There are much much better sparkling wines around the world than what champagne is which is really just a wine that is made drinkable by the addition of sugar and other flavour enhancers in the final dosage. I can point you in the direction of completely natural sparkling wines made only with the natural ingredients of grapes and it is infinitely more tasty than champagne for us mortals. We should not be influenced or manipulated by brand or taste or cost but to begin with by the man that makes the wine – the winemaker. Start with him and his provenance and then taste his wines. Its the only way to find the wine you like to drink that provides your with the bonus of being healthy ie with minimal intervention. What more do you need.
