Our evening soireé last week finished well into the night as our guests enjoyed themselves so much. It could have gone on longer unless we had gently prompted a departure to bed. Our menu was a starter of roasted tomato, feta and bread with rocket, main of sauté pork fillet with a pink wine reduction, blue cheese and crème fraiche sauce, gratin and garden vegetables, cheese, and a dessert of fresh raspberries, meringue and ice cream. Wines: Saumur blanc classic for the starter, Cabernet de Saumur with the main and Saumur rouge classic with the cheese.

A well earned evening out for Karin and I with two of our fellow Mah Jongers Liz and Roy to Le Puy á Vins restaurant in Puy Notre Dame. A very important town in the Loire valley, France on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Also as it has a relic in the church which became important to the crown of France. We had enjoyed three games of  Mah Jong without our other partners who were either busy or away at Manoir de Gourin. We have a lovely secluded spot on the outside terrace. Roy and I played dismally and the girls swept the board. Karin winning two and Liz one game. Le Puy á Vins  sits in a lovely position by the church and it was a lovely evening.

We enjoyed starters of local Charente melon and Serrano ham, crab and avocado salad and terrine. Mains were roast duck fillet and grilled steak. Dessert was a fig tart. We had a white Saumur Blanc from Domaine de Guyon in Puy Notre Dame. Old barrel oak aged. Very good.

It was late very late very late indeed that we left Manoir de Gourin after lunch on the Terrace. Karin had slaved over a hot stove to produce a super lunch and it must have been well after 4 that we stumbled out and on our way to an Anjou vineyard where  we were met by the winemaker himself Hubert. Hubert is also a comedienne so we were all having a laugh pretty soon after arriving. We tackled the vineyard with a visit to see the Chardonnay used both for sparkling Saumur and also a very good indeed still chardonnay IGP with our friend Gordon in tow.

Liz and Tom and Kate and Dug were taken through to the reception area where the grapes are pressed before being fed into the underground vat for settling before decanting into the vats for fermentation to start. We visited the wineroom and store before arriving in the tasting room to enjoy a complete run through the wines. Wow.

Some time later and well into the evening we stumbled back to Manoir de Gourin, A great adventure.

I suppose we should talk seriously about the wines of the Loire. Why? Why because they are undiscovered gems of exquisite quality and of natural provenance that you do not know about BUT our wine tourers do now they have been on a wine tour with us in the Loire valley. So good reason to come along on one of our tours. Just email us at info@loirewinetours.com. See you soon?

Gabby and Jeremy, and Phil and Christine had serious enjoyment with the tour and so they should when we take them on a discovery that gives them such amazing wines. We talked about the Loire valley and the styles and grapes and we tasted 10 top class wines. What was important was to demonstrate the quality, diversity and provenance that is available at such good prices. I mean who cannot be blown away by an appellation wine with accolades from local and national level and as an ambassador for the Loire at 6.50€ a bottle. Wow.  I was and so were our guests I reckon.

Liz and Tom, and  Kate and Dug returned from an extremely strenuous morning at the estate of Enchantoir ready for lunch.  Ten wines tasted and analysed for flavours and food pairing. So very hard to do!  Karin prepared for us all a most scrumptious lunch. Starter was freshly picked Charente melon from the Vendee with local cured ham and our fresh garden mint. Main was a pan fried salmon with our own garden chard, beans and potatoes. All healthy and natural. Cheese followed and the dessert was fresh garden raspberries, meringue and ice cream. Lovely. Thanks Karin. Wine was a classic chenin with the melon, Cabernet de Saumur with the main and Saumur rouge classic with the cheese. What a meal and nobody wanted to move so a late start to the afternoon. Well we are in France are we not so lest see what happens.

Why not do the wine tour with us and experience our wines first hand with the winemaker. Its the only way to find wines of provenance. These are top quality natural wines. Go to www.loirewinetours.com and see what we have to offer our wine lovers.

An interesting afternoon spent at Domaine de L’Enchantoir  with the blending of the oak aged Saumur Puy Notre Dame. In 2011 the red Cabernet Franc was fermented and macerated for the Saumur Puy Notre Dame appellation wine. A part of this wine was stored in 8000 litre concrete vats for two years for the classic cuveé whilst 3300 litres was stored and aged in old Bordeaux barrels of 225 and 425 litres also for two years down in the old cellars below the house for a separate cuveé. Today the winemaker Pierre Van Den Boom was emptying the barrels into a vat to blend the wine prior to bottling. Then the pressed juice from that vintage was considered as an addition to the cuveé so Pierre made up three different blends. The first being just the blended wines from the barrels, the second with the addition of 5% pressed juice and the  third with 10% of pressed juice. Brigitte his wife has the best palate so she tasted the three samples and decided on the 10% pressed juice addition. I tasted and  agreed it added a more complex and rounded tannic taste and was distinct difference from the classic Puy Notre Dame cuveé.

Here’s the update for the week ahead for all those looking for the best day to drink that special bottle of wine.

A good start to the week with a fruit day on Monday and Tuesday morning so if you have a good bottle that you need to try go for it. Actually we have a Lalande de Pomerol 2011 to try so we will open it with a juicy steak tomorrow night. Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning are root days so avoid the good bottle. Wednesday in the middle of the day is also good. Then we have to wait to have a flower day on Friday from 6pm which continues until Saturday evening. Great. then a fruit day on Sunday until 1pm and a short flower spell until 6pm before leaf. So that makes it a great weekend for supping a great bottle of wine or three.

We enjoyed an extended evening with long time guests Ewan and Di  who have returned for the third time. Now married so celebrations all round for our lovely couple. So we had to celebrate the happy event with some pink bubbly from Enchantoir of course and they were not disappointed.

So a good grounding in some basic facts of the wines of the Loire valley. Actually its not so complex if you look at the appellations and grape varietals. Just three whites. Melon in Muscadet, Chenin in Anjou, Saumur, Chinon, Vouvray and Montlouis, and Sauvignon in Touriane and Sancerre, (plus Chardonnay for sparkling) and just one main red Cabernet Franc. Yes I know we have Pinot Noir in Sancerre and Gamay in Anjou and Malbec in Touraine and so on.  I know there are nuances but this gives someone the bare facts that will be sufficient when studying a wine list or a wine shop shelf for style and grape variety.

So Liz and Tom, and Kate and Dug enjoyed a morning in Saumur Country. That’s Chenin for white, Cabernet for pink and red. You don’t need to know any more on grape variety. Styles yes dry and fresh, demi sec and sweet whites, demi-sec and sec pinks, fruity reds with some oak ageing, sparkling Saumur and Cremant, white ,pink and reds (VMQ). Easy.

A beautiful sunny day started in the wineroom at Manoir de Gourin for our four guests Liz and Tom, and Dug and Kate, with a talk on the wines of the Loire valley. Our talk is just to give guests a brief understanding of the styles of wines and some background on grape variety and tasting. This we accomplished whilst enjoying a cup of tea (very English) and some homemade crispy biscuits. Yummy. Thence we ventured off out into the world of vineyards, winerooms, cellars and tasting rooms. What better way, I ask, to spend a day in your hectic life?
